Founded by Ann C. Colley, SUNY Distinguished Professor, in the fall of 2008, this series celebrates and draws attention to the remarkable research being done in various departments at Buffalo State, SUNY.
The lectures, given three times per semester, offer an opportunity to listen to and participate in a conversation with faculty at Buffalo State who are engaged in research projects. These events are open to members of the College as well as to the larger community. For more than a dozen years, faculty from many departments have given talks. The lectures take place on certain Friday afternoons from 3-4:30 p.m. A reception follows so that people have an opportunity to extend the discussion and chat. During the Covid 19 pandemic, Conversations has been held virtually over Zoom.
The subjects of these lectures have been varied. They have addressed such subjects as “The Boxing Narrative and the Politics of Race,” “Women Work in Western Turkey,” “Teaching a Secondary Methods Course in an Urban School,” “The Legacy of Winslow Homer,” “Biotelemetry to Monitor Animal Behavior,” “Annotations in Early American Dictionaries,” “Conceptual Space for the Social Construction of Mathematical Entities,” “Victorian Mountain Climbing as Spectacle,” “The Political Risks and the Flow of Foreign Direct Investment,” “Post-Industrial Ecology,” “Flash Fiction, “ “Detecting Subsurface Ice in the Canadian Arctic,” “Mathematical Modeling of Renal Dynamics,” “Richard Hofstadter’s Identity as a Jewish Intellectual,” “The Place of Public Art,” “Max Horkheimer and the Foundations of the Frankfurt School, “ “Sonoran Desert Biogeography,” “Global Obesity and Diabetes,” “Puerto Rico’s Statehood,” “The Feeding Ecology of the Tana River Mangabey of Kenya,” and “Mae West: Comedy and the Disenfranchised Woman Playwright.”
The Conversations In and Out of the Discipline Lecture Series is sponsored by the Department of English and is run by Professors Barish Ali, David Ben-Merre, and Ann C. Colley
