About the Program

The master of arts in English program is designed to provide flexibility in meeting individual student interests while ensuring a broad understanding of the significant areas within the professional study of English. The program builds upon students’ undergraduate work in English by offering the opportunity to study several different areas of concentration in depth. It also serves as an excellent preparatory program for doctoral-level study in English.

Our English M.A. program offers several unique and highly desirable features, including

• One-on-one mentoring with faculty producing the latest scholarship in their fields

• New seminar topics each year, plus courses on traditional forms of literary analysis
• Access to a wide range of literary approaches through our distribution requirements (American literature, British literature, world literature, genre studies, critical theory and social justice, and research in literature and language)
• The ability to specialize in a particular area of study through our 12 elective credits
•  The opportunity to write a full-length master’s thesis on a student-chosen topic, under close faculty supervision
• Yearly workshops on applying to Ph.D. programs and panels on post-MA careers other than teaching
