On April 18, WNYnet, EESA, and Buffalo State hosted a continuing speaker series for 2013, featuring Sweet Home High School English teachers Lisa Feyes and Heather Paolucci who shared the work they have implemented regarding Readers and Writers Workshop in their classrooms.
We were able to host two separate events in March! First, EESA (Buffalo State's English Education Student Association) sponsored a job workshop in which a panel of WNYnet officers helped future, as well as current, educators refine their resumes, portfolios, and interviewing skills.
Shortly after, Geoff Schutte, cofounder of Educators for a Better Buffalo, invited us to hold our public meeting at Tapestry Charter School. Geoff and some of his colleagues were able to showcase their innovative teaching practices and recall how they have found success in reforming traditional approaches to English education.
Thank you to Shannon Burke Krukowski for hosting our January public meeting at Elmwood Village Charter School. Shannon's students shared their "I Am" poems, and then Lisa Feyes and Heather Paolucci from Sweet Home led a discussion about implementing Reading and Writing Workshop into curriculum.
A special thanks to Joel Malley from Cheektowaga for participating in our speaker series on November 6, at Buffalo State.
Here is the video of Joel's talk.
Thank you to Gretchen Cercone and the ELA Department at JFK Middle School for welcoming us on October 18. Many great ideas were shared, and there was an overwhelming sense of a community of practice.
Our sincerest Thanks to Kristen Pastore Capuana and all of the people who attended our first ever Summer Conversation on August 13 at Buffalo State. The turn out was tremendous, and the discussion really set the tone for the coming school year. Below you will find the video recording for Kristen's talk, "What is English?"
