Writing Major and Minor overview
The English Department offers both a major and a minor in writing. Both are dynamic programs that allow students to hone their writing skills in a variety of genres and styles. Both the major and the minor allow students to explore a combination of creative and technical writing courses, as best fits students’ needs and interests. Some of the courses we offer include introductory and advanced studies of poetry and narrative, technical writing, grant writing, and writing for the professions. Writing Majors also engage in advanced study in Rhetoric and Composition theory.
Applied Learning
In addition to their course work, students in the Writing major and minor have ample opportunity to hone their creative and critical skills in a variety of applied learning contexts. Some applied learning opportunities for our students include:
- ENG 357 Literary Publishing: This course explores how to create and sustain a literary journal, through selection, editing, and producing. Students in this course help work on Buffalo State’s Literary Journal ELJ (Elmleaves Journal).
- Internships: The Writing Major is particularly suited to internship opportunities with local business and offices seeking students who have experience in writing. One of our most recent internships was in the local office of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
- The Drop Hammer Reading Series: a monthly reading featuring a special guest reader, a student reader, and an open reading slots
- Dedicated Technology Space: In the Fall of 2015, the Ilene R. Fleischmann Publication suite opened in Ketchum 302 to specifically support literary publishing and writing.
